Fall is Fabulous on the Farm
All my favorite Fall fruits are ripe on the Farm! White Sapotes, Jujubes, Figs and yellow Strawberry Guavas. And TONS of sweet organic Tomatoes. All sizes, shapes and colors! Too many to pick, yet so hard to leave such perfect, heavy, bright red ripe fruits on the vine.
I’ve had to be very creative using all the Tomatoes I’ve been picking. I even made a Tomato Veggie Soup from scratch! Plus sugar sweet Orange Persimmons are right around the corner 🙂
Jujube Jubilee
Recently I got to pick fresh Jujubes from a 16 acre Jujube Farm! It was thrilling to be able to sample so many different varieties!
Jujubes are VERY good for you, they help with insomnia and promote relaxation and can also lower your blood pressure, aid your liver and digestion and may prevent tumors. They have 20 times more vitamin C than any citrus fruit and they also have magnesium, potassium, copper, niacin, calcium, manganese, phosphorus, and iron.
This farm also had Cactus Fruit, Dragon Fruit, Longons and some extra large juicy red Surinam Cherries. YUM! I planted my cherry pits and hopefully they’ll sprout 🙂
What’s Slimy, Prickly and Good for You?
I’ve also been incorporating some NEW and exciting veggies into my diet and recipes! Vegetables that I’ve either NEVER eaten or hardly ever eat.
I’ve started juicing Beet Greens, Turnip Greens, Radish Greens, & Jicama (which adds sweetness & a wonderful texture) and I recently made a Fermented Veggie blend with Radishes.
Slime Time Can Be Sublime!
And I chopped up the SLIMY SUPERFOOD, Nopal CACTUS leaves, which I’ve never eaten before! It turned out really good. Quite slimy 🙂 ha!! But great.
The FRUIT from Nopal Cactus, called Prickly Pears, or Tunas, is fabulous. I’m addicted to it! I love the Magenta ones best. They’re like a bright fuchsia purple color! I make smoothies from Cactus fruit several times a week. I just cut the ends off each cactus fruit, drop them into the blender with some juice and strain the seeds out. YUM!!!
I sliced the Nopal Cactus leaf in with thinly sliced Carrots and Radishes and I am now completely in LOVE with fermented Radishes. Wow!! They’re SO delicious. So now I’m making 2 huge batches of Fermented Carrots, Radish, Korean Radish, Jicama, Ginger, Garlic & Cabbage. Excited to see how it turns out!!!
Nopal Cactus is being called a Superfood because it can boost weight loss, your immune system, fight cancer, help with diabetes, arthritis, muscle pain and make your skin look younger. Wow!
It’s nice you can get these terrific benefits from the sweet Fruit too, because I just can’t get enough of Prickly Pear Smoothies lately!
I’ve also been making WAY too many Kale Chips, since I can never pass up a pretty bunch of Kale 🙂 so I have about 4 different batches right now that need to be eaten!
